Bailey Medical Center and Owasso Public Schools Launch PLAY
Submitted by ahs-admin on Thu, 01/09/2014 - 05:57Life is busy. Families are always on the go. Convenience often wins when it comes to making decisions that affect our family’s health and well-being, unfortunately. As a result, we spend less time around the kitchen table together and our children spend less time being physically active. A new survey released this week by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finds that only one in four adolescents get the recommended one hour or more of rigorous physical activity a day. This lifestyle shift is directly impacting the health of our youth, with childhood obesity doubling and adolescent obesity tripling in the last 30 years.
It is the reason Bailey Medical Center’s Health and Wellness Coordinator and PLAY Program Director David Steward is passionate about a new program through a partnership with Owasso Public Schools – the PLAY Program. “I am so excited to roll out the PLAY Program in Owasso,” says David. “This program involves kids, parents, Owasso Public Schools, Owasso-area restaurants and more. This is something the entire community can embrace and everyone will have fun.”
On Wednesday, January 8 students at Ator Heights Elementary School in Owasso watched in awe as the Tulsa Shock’s Volt literally vaulted through the air, twisting and turning as he dunked ball after ball. Representing the restaurant industry, Chick-Fil-A’s Cow got in on the action to energize the students about the new program and ways they can get involved to help their families make healthy decisions.
Even ESPN's Sports Center took note, tweeting "Picture of the day? Priceless reactions in Owasso, OK sa Tulsa Shock mascot Volt soars for slam (Via @TulsaWorld)."
The PLAY Program will be on a month-long roll-out across the Owasso Public School system to show the district’s 5,000 students and their families how they can get involved, using PLAY Passports at area restaurants to reward students for making healthy meal decisions. Once a passport has been filled out with the 36 stickers from participating restaurants, students can redeem their passports at Bailey Medical Center for discounts on local sporting events. Parents and teachers can also get involved through a variety of online activities and learning opportunities to develop a long-term foundation for making healthy choices centered around the 5-2-1 Almost None campaign.
